Electronic data interchange (EDI) to facilitate the exchange of commercial documents between business partners
What is EDI?
Essentially, EDI is an electronic communication system that provides standards for exchanging data electronically. EDI platforms ensure that digital business documents (like Purchase Orders and Invoices) sent from one business partner in a specific format gets to its trading partner in a format that can be easily integrated without manual intervention. In other words, a Purchase Order or Invoice travels directly out of a sender’s computer system directly into a receiver’s computer system without any human intervention; No paperwork, no hassles, regardless of the internal systems being used by either party. Business documents that once took days and weeks to process are now created and delivered within hours.
Advantages to using Electronic Transactions (EDI)
- Productivity : Automation and standardization of otherwise manual processes
- Reliability : Reduced errors from manual entry
- Optimization : Reduced administrative costs
- Visibility : Real-time view over all transactions exchanged
- Reduced Costs : Improved Supply Chain processes and management
